Malloy T-150 drones

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have once again made their mark on military history by carrying out a unique operation in the Kherson region. The main target was the bridge over the Konka River, which serves as the most important supply route for the occupying forces on the nearby islands. This event not only demonstrates the immense importance of unmanned aerial vehicles but also shows how the mistakes of individual enemy soldiers can determine the fate of an entire crossing.

From a strategic standpoint, bridges have always been key targets during armed conflicts (the titles of films alone say a lot about this: "The Bridge at Remagen", "The Bridge on the River Kwai", and even... “Bridge of Spies”). The crossing over the Konka River was heavily used by the Russian army to deliver ammunition, fuel, and food rations to troops stationed on the islands in the Kherson region. Initially, Ukrainian forces attempted to destroy this structure using standard and highly effective methods. Rockets from modern American HIMARS systems were fired repeatedly at the bridge. Although this weapon is renowned for its exceptional accuracy and devastating destructive power, the bridge over the Konka River proved to be an unbreakable barrier. The bridge’s engineering structure was designed to absorb the force of impacts from above as much as possible. Thick layers of reinforced concrete and steel ensured that rockets striking the road surface were unable to damage the main load-bearing supports. Even if damage occurred on the bridge, the enemy could still use it safely. The Ukrainian command found itself in a difficult position, as further wasting of precious ammunition was pointless. These days, information is just as important a weapon as rifles and tanks. Military intelligence analyzes thousands of reports every day, searching for the enemy’s weak points. In the case of the bridge over the Konka River, the breakthrough came from the least expected direction. One of the Russian soldiers stationed at the crossing made an unforgivable mistake by posting a photo of himself online. The photo was taken directly beneath the bridge structure. To the average viewer, it was just another photo from the front lines, but to Ukrainian intelligence analysts, it was a true gift from fate. The image revealed a highly detailed view of the underside of the bridge, exposing critical weaknesses in the supports and pillars. From below, the bridge lacked the heavy armor found on the roadway surface. It became clear that the structure was exceptionally vulnerable to strikes from below, aimed precisely at the exposed, critical points. The challenge, however, remained to develop a method that would allow for the precise delivery of explosives to these specific locations, bypassing the thick armor from above.

This nearly impossible task was assigned to experts in modern warfare—the soldiers of the 426th Unmanned Systems Regiment. This unit is known for implementing innovative and unconventional solutions using drones. To meet the challenge, Ukrainian specialists turned to powerful machines supplied from the United Kingdom, namely the Malloy T-150 drones. This extraordinary equipment bears no resemblance to the small, plastic devices found on store shelves. The Malloy T-150 is a heavy, multi-rotor platform with enormous lift capacity, originally designed for agricultural use, including as equipment to facilitate herding cattle across Australia’s rugged terrain. Over time, its ability to carry heavy loads was adapted for military use, primarily to transport supplies to the front lines. Ukrainian engineers from the 426th Regiment, however, took a step forward and decided to transform this transport vehicle into a lethal weapon of almost surgical precision. The key to the operation’s success was the proper preparation of the ammunition itself. A unique shaped-charge warhead was developed, weighing approximately 50 kg. Shaped-charge warheads work by concentrating the entire energy of the explosion into a single, very narrow point, allowing them to penetrate the hardest concrete and thick steel.

The strike phase itself was a showcase of the drone operators’ top-notch skills. The heavy Malloy T-150 drones approached the bridge silently, then used special mechanisms to slowly lower heavy loads on cables, maneuvering them beneath the bridge structure. The charges were placed with extreme care, precisely at the weak points revealed by the photo published by a reckless Russian soldier. However, bringing down such a massive structure was not a matter of a single explosion. This operation required immense patience and determination. As the published materials indicate, the drones carried out dozens of such missions, each time placing another charge under the critical pillars. It is estimated that a total of up to 1.5 tons of explosives were transported and detonated. Systematic attacks gradually weakened the bridge’s stability until its structure was completely destroyed and the crossing collapsed into the water. The destruction of the bridge over the Konka River is an event that will certainly be thoroughly analyzed by commanders around the world. The success of the 426th Unmanned Systems Regiment proves that innovation combined with proper reconnaissance can yield better results than overwhelming firepower. Where advanced, multi-million-dollar missile systems proved helpless against engineering fortifications, heavy unmanned technology and open-source intelligence triumphed. Drones have ultimately proven that they are no longer just the eyes of the army, but have become a fully-fledged and exceptionally effective assault tool.
